JEREMY Clarkson went on an off-script rant about his The Grand Tour castmates Richard Hammond and James May in tonight’s Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?.

The 60-year-old star appeared to catch himself off-guard as he made hilarious jibes about his famous pals “showing off” by using the phonetic alphabet on the ITV show.

The host was helping contestant Norma with her £2,000 question, which asked: “In the NATO phonetic alphabet, what is the only letter that is represented by the name of a country?”

Although Norma thought that it was I for India, she chose to use her Ask The Host lifeline to make sure that she’d carry on in the game show.

Jeremy confirmed that I was the correct answer, before moaning about the reason why he knew this.

He ranted: “I work with James May and Richard Hammond, who have pilot’s licenses, and that’s all they talk about.

“They talk all the time where when they say a letter they don’t say ‘B’, they say ‘Bravo’.”

Continuing with the hilarious swipe, Jeremy mocked: “You’re not on a plane now! It’s just showing off, that alphabet.”

Realising he’d got carried away, the star chuckled as he turned to Norma and joked: “Good, well I’ve got that off my chest – thank you!”

Jeremy has worked with Richard and James since 2002, with the trio fronting the BBC’s Top Gear together until 2015.

They went on to host The Grand Tour together and remain close pals – although James recently admitted that he was forced to tone down the “genuine friction” he had with his co-stars for the cameras.

James told TVMag that any tension or hostility between the presenters was not allowed to be seen on the show – and one particularly stressful challenged tested their patience.

He shared: “There’s genuine friction, we have to tone it down for television otherwise it wouldn’t be allowed.

“It was so hard to be honest to get up that road and we did, we did start to think that we, you know, we’ve been given something we actually wouldn’t be able to achieve which is a worry when you’re making a TV show because you have to you have to conclude the show in some way.”
